Born in Bolinas, California 1979, Gabriel Deerman is primarily a painter, printmaker and draftsman with a strong interest in contemporary figurative and landscape based visual arts. Gabriel's work utilizes traditional approaches to working from observation as a means of engaging issues of the present such as globalization and climate triggered cultural and scientific re-assessments of human relationships to time and place. Gabriel's art practice is at once an inquiry into the aesthetic experience of nature as well as a process of attunement- bringing him and viewers closer to bridging the human/nature divide.
Gabriel received an MFA from Transart Institute (New York / Berlin), a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2007 and is a practicing art instructor. Gabriel was the owner/director of independent arts venues Maslianski's Parking Lot and Recording Studio and Gaff Gallery in Vancouver's Down Town East Side as well as Galerie Rye in Montreal.
Gabriel is a co-owner/operator of Salmon River Studios- an art studio at his farm in Tamworth, Ontario with a mandate of producing work and educational programming focused on art, ecology & community.
Gabriel currently teaches and practices art in Jeju S. Korea
